Sainte-Beuve contended that the artist's biography was central to the interpretation of their artwork, and this is demonstrated in the present collection, which includes essays on Racine, Rousseau, Diderot, and l'Abbe Prevost. Two of three volumes. With a sticker from 'George's' in Bristol to the front pastedown of volume I. In a blue quarter calf binding over patterned boards. Externally, smart. A little rubbed to the boards, with a small chip in the paper to the front board of volume I. Very lightly rubbed to the spine of volume I, with some light wear towards the extremities of both volumes. Internally, firmly bound.
