Rare offprint of an article by the pioneering American logician, psychologist and feminist Christine Ladd (1847-1930). "Following completion of graduate work [under C.S. Peirce], Ladd married Fabian Franklin, a member of the mathematics faculty at Johns Hopkins and her former classmate. In 1891 2 they spent a year studying in Europe. By that time Ladd-Franklin had begun working on the problem of binocular vision, combining her mathematical interests with the new experimental psychology. She expanded her research on vision in the laboratories of G. E. Müller in Göttingen and H. Von Helmholtz in Berlin, who held opposing theories of color vision with Müller following E. Hering s position. Ladd-Franklin s new theory attempted to incorporate the strong points of both. She assumed a photochemical model whereby complementary colors are due to retinal chemistry and proposed a three-stage evolutionary development of color sensation. Her contributions to color vision science continued to the end of her long life. In the year before her death a collection of her papers published between 1892 and 1926 appeared as Colour and Colour Theories (1929)" (Dictionary of Modern American Philosophers, Thoemmes Press, 2005). "Ladd-Franklin is now often remembered as much for the strength of her feminist convictions as for the insightfulness of her research. She was one of the first two women to be elected to the American Psychological Association in 1893 (the other was Mary Whiton Calkins), but her tendency to buck the patriarchy prevented her inclusion in prominent committees. She was, however, listed in Cattell's American Men of Science volume and was one of only three women psychologists starred in 1903. She often published on the issue of equality for women within the academy" (Kelli Vaughn, 2010, Profile of Christine Ladd-Franklin in A. Rutherford (Ed.), Psychology's Feminist Voices Multimedia Internet Archive).
