Scarce American edition by Joseph Mason Cox (1763-1818) was an early nineteenth century English physician whose entire professional career was devote to care and treatment of mentally ill people. Cox s maternal grandfather owned Fishponds, a lunatic asylum near Bristol where Joesph took over until his death in 1818. Fishponds continued to served as an asylum until 1859. This work was first published in 1804 and had two subsequent editions in 1811 and 1813, published in France, Germany and the U.S. Cox believed in kind and gentle management of the mentally ill and described hydrotherapy in both mania and melancholia. He described detailed descriptions of medications used like digitalis, derived from Foxglove, as an anti-maniacal remedy. Erasmus Darwin (1731-1802), naturalist and physician and grandfather to Charles Darwin, advocated for Cox s medical practices. Important provenance of J.P. Batchelder, a New York surgeon and lecturer who wrote one of the first, if not the first, pamphlets on the Cholera epidemic in New York City, Cholera: Its Causes, Symptoms and Treatment, Considered and Explained, 1849 . The 1832 arrival of cholera in the United State inspired a host of publications by physicians about the disease. By 1849, many New York physicians had accepted that cholera was portable, if not contagious. This pamphlet, by the eminent New York lecturer and surgeon J. P. Batchelder, documents a moment when the medical community was studying the spread of epidemic diseases in earnest, but the science was not yet understood. In a section on causes, Batchelder enumerates a long list of populations susceptible to the disease, including those suffering from hunger and those exposed to the night air. -The New York Academy of Medicine Archives.
