William H(ickling) Prescott (1796-1859) was an American historian and Hispanist, whose works comprise The History of the Reign of Ferdinand and Isabella the Catholic (1837), The History of the Conquest of Mexico (1843), A History of the Conquest of Peru (1847) and the unfinished History of the Reign of Philip II (1856-1858). This 6-volume edition of his works (c.1880) presents these in single-volume form, with the exception of Philip II which spreads into a second volume, that in turn containing 13 of Prescott's Essays. The larger part of The History of the Reign of Charles the Fifth was written by the Scot William Robertson D.D. (1721-93), a work much admired by Prescott; Prescott's appendix on the years following Charles's abdication was included mainly to correct inaccuracies in the text and fill out further details following the discovery of the Emperor's letters in Simancas. Tissue guarded frontispiece plate to each volume. Upper board of vol. 6 detached. Extremities of some of the spines frayed. Occasional foxing. 560pp; 479pp; 464pp; 500pp; 185 +255pp + 2 pp. advts; 684pp. Half calf, marbled boards, edges & endpapers; gilt dec. spine, raised bands, gilt panels, red & gilt title labels, brown & gilt volume labels. Some general wear, corners a little bumped and worn. Previous owner's bookplate to front paste-down of each vol. Internally very good and tightly bound. Some pages uncut.
