Inhaltsangabe: Spending the summer on a New Hamsphire farm, fifteen-year-old Beth trains a beautiful chestnut horse for a local race and develops a friendship with an unpopular classmate.
From School Library Journal:
Grade 6-9 Ninth-grade Beth's anticipation of a New Hampshire summer on horseback is dampered because her mother has invited along unpopular Sophie. Beth comes across as a self-centered, not entirely likable, but definitely feisty teen. At Pretty Penny Farm, her vacation turns into a period of self-discovery, during which she learns to accept Sophie and falls for handsome college man Dave (and she gets to ride Dave's lively Thoroughbred, Charmin'). Hoppe writes in a crisp, cinematic style, relying on strong dialogue to develop realistic scenes. However, some abrupt transitions and characters' actions strain credibility. Predictable plot twists conveniently allow Beth to win a race on Charmin'. Readers will also realize early in the novel that Dave hides a secret about his ownership of the speedy horseCharmin' is actually a star of the racetrack. For better stories in this genre, offer books by Jean Doty, but where horse-crazy readers clamor for more, Hoppe's combination of equine action, first love, and contemporary teen anxieties will supplement collections.
