The Principles of Agriculture and Vegetation, by Francis Home, M. D., President of the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh; and One of His Majesty's Physicians. The Third Edition, with Additions. London: Printed for T. Cadell in the Strand; and J. Bell and W. Creech, Edinburgh. M,DCC,LXXVI. An early and groundbreaking book on agricultural plant science. The author conducted experiments relating chemistry to fertilizers, incorporating various types of soils and plants and demonstrating the effects. His original printing of this work received a gold medal from the Edinburgh Society. To these original papers have been added "some few additions", resulting in this Third Edition. Scarce and influential work, not easy to find. Bound in original full leather covered boards which is mostly complete but showing the ravages of time. Bookworm damage at several spots on the cover, but nothing large. 2 worm holes into front edge, neither reaching text. Original red speckled edges and gilt lettering on spine are very faint now. Cracks along spine and small missing pieces at top of spine. Inside appears to be complete and is fairly tight. Hinge is cracked at title page and title page is partially detached. Period bookplate inside front and script "Saml Elam" at top of title page. Otherwise pages are fairly clean with some spots of foxing but nothing serious. Ribbon marker is present but frayed at lower end. All in all a solid copy of this scarce book. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 002653
