Hardcover in blindstamped floral design dark brown cloth with spine lettered in gilt. xii+ 377 pp. Frontispiece woodcut "The Interior Of The Jail In Palmyra Missouri". A firmly bound, copy, near fine with a touch of rounding to the tips. Three abolitionists, the Englishman George Thompson, and Americans James E. Burr and Alanson Work, attempted in 1841 to aid slaves trying to escape to freedom. The three were arrested in Missouri for grand larceny, convicted and sentenced to 12 years hard labor in the state penitentiary. None served their entire sentences, Thompson serving the longest (five years). Work, the oldest of the three, was living at the Mission Institute across the Mississippi River from Missouri, while his children were being educated; Burr and Thompson were students there studying for the ministry. In July, 1841, Burr crossed the river on "a tour of mercy", reaching an agreement with two slaves to meet again on a certain night and be transported across the river to freedom. When that night came, the three abolitionists were ambushed by a group of slaves and their armed masters and arrested. …
