1954 4th ptg. 246pp. illus. hardback 8vo: Good+ in a generally Good dj in Brodart poly cover [edges & endpp. are age foxed; else a clean, complete & tight copy; dj = p-c; some loss @ spine head; few small edge nicks & tears; else G] An unusual dual memoir by two notable British prisoners of war in Germany, who spent their time together mainly at the notorious prison castle Colditz, between Leipzig and Dresden. Romilly (1916-67) was a nephew of Winston Churchill, and Alexander (1920-2004) was a relation of the famous Field Marshal (although not, as the Germans suspected, his nephew). Their memoir includes portraits of several other special fellow prisoners in Colditz known to the Germans as Prominente: among them relations of the British royal family and Earl Haig. When this book was published within a decade of the war, critics praised it. Christopher Sykes, writing in The Observer, called it a work of art which contains, among many admirable things, a description . . . of the spectacle of Germany in process of defeat which is worthy to rank with the best reportage ever achieved. [Sir] Michael Howard praised the book as A remarkable contribution to the literature of the Second World War. Not to be missed. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 5958
