Map. Uncolored engraving. Sheet measures 16 1/2" x 23 7/8" This minimalist 19th century map depicts the province of Venezia in Italy, showing roads, streets, highways, railways through the region. Cities, communes, churches, and rivers are labeled. The city of Venice and surrounding islets and lowlands are rendered in beautiful detail. In very good condition, with some overall toning and a faint crease along the center, visible only on verso. Stains to verso. Francesco Valllardi (1809-1895) was an mapmaker from a Milanese family of publishers, booksellers, and printers. His grandfather, also named Francesco, founded the publishing house in the 18th century, and was succeeded by his songs Giuseppe and Pietro who operated under the imprint Fratelli Vallardi. Francesco, one of Pietro's sons, established his own eponymous publishing house in 1840; his brother Antonio did the same in 1843. They left an impressive legacy in 19th century Italian mapmaking.
