Watts, D.D., Printed by Manning & Loring for Thomas & Andrews, and Manning & Loring, Boston, 1803, 287 pp. Full red morocco leather binding tooled with Mrs. C.F.W. Callender s tooled American binding, 7.5 x 4.75 , 12mo. In good condition. Moderate wear to extremities particular at corners and end bands. Light dryness along hinges and end bands. Minor creasing down center of spine. Gilt tooling remains lovely and bright. Callender s name is lightly rubbed. Red leather is slightly darkened from wear and oxidation. Nicely marbled end papers. Mrs. C.F.W. Callender January 1, 1817 written in old hand on rear front flyleaf. Textblock lightly toned with scattered foxing. Free of marginalia. Binding tight and intact. Lovely! Please see photos. This is the copy of Mrs. C.F.W. Callender. Probably presented to who by her husband Charles Callender (1791?-1840) as a Christmas or New Year s gift (inscription is dated to New Year s), who was a publisher in Boston and proprietor of the Shakespeare Circulating Library. This edition of Watt s Psalter is rather uncommon, and tooled American bindings with identifiable provenance are getting scarcer and scarcer. Watts (1674-1748) was an English Christian minister, hymn writer, theologian and logician. He was a prolific and popular hymn writer having been credited for more than 750 hymns.
