BOOK RESUME: Extract from introduction 'Before the invention of printing, drawings an illustration were regarded with mistrust as a means of conveying information. Due to the corruption which arose by the accumulation of errors inseparable from repeated copying by scribes who may always have fully understood the material they are transcribing. Illustrations were much more vulnerable to this process than words. It was for this reason that Ptolemy wrote his Geographia which is not a map, but a treatise giving precise and detailed instructions for the construction of a set of maps of the known world. It is divided into eight books, the first contains discussions of the principles of map making, and the state of knowledge at the time and concludes with directions for drawing a graticule of parallels of latitude and meridians of longitude on a simple conic projection and on a modified conic with curved meridians.
