"This interesting real estate atlas covers a large area across Chicago's South Side that was formerly part of Hyde Park Township, prior to its annexation into the city in 1889. Much of the area comprised the industrial town of Pullman, which had fallen into a steep decline by the time the volume was published in 1959 by West Chicago's Sidwell Studio, Inc. .The atlas begins with a detailed diagram that outlines the Permanent Real Estate Index Number system - a new method of organization introduced for property tax assessment and real estate purposes. Area, block, and parcel numbers are easy to reference and provided on each sheet. The table of contents and index map immediately follow, with the latter defining the exact boundaries of 87th St. (north), Stony Island Ave./Lake Calumet (east), 139th St. (south), and State St. (west). The property covered by each of the seventy double folio pages is numbered within. Each of the 'Clear View Maps', copywritten 1958 and revised through the early 1960s, shows the parcel sizes, major infrastructure, geographic features, prominent property owners, and other details of interest to the real estate industry. Blocks of text on either side provide further details on the organization of various subdivisions, though the lack of manuscript updates indicates the atlas was lightly used over the course of its life. Also of interest is the update to the Sidwell Studio location that took place between 1958 and 1959, as reflected in the copyright stamps on the first and second pages. The former offices were located at Prince Crossing on Route 1 in West Chicago, in the Chicago, Aurora & Elgin Railroad Station. However, passenger service aboard that line abruptly ended in 1957, necessitating a move to new headquarters on North Avenue.
