The Purple Island, in twelve cantos of seven-line stanzas, is an elaborate allegorical description of the human body and of the vices and virtues to which man is subject. The body is represented as an island, in which the bones stand for the foundations, the veins for brooks, and so forth in a style somewhat imitative of Spenser's Faerie Queene. The Piscatory Eclogs and other Poeticall Miscellanies has a separate title-page. A third title-page introduces another poem, "Elisa: an Elegie upon the unripe demise of Sr Antonie Irby." A poem by Francis Quarles closes the volume: "To my deare friend, the Spencer [sic.] of this day." Title page in red and black, Cambridge Press device at every opportunity; Head & Tailpieces throughout. Blind ruled calf nicely rebacked with gilt title to morocco label; gilt date to foot; edges a faded red. 4 (Lacks 1,blank, as Pforzheimer copy) ,4,A-Z4 (with Z4,blank),?2 (?1,blank),A-L4,M2,N2,O-R4.
