Ernest Taylor Pyle (1900?1945) was a Pulitzer Prize?winning American journalist and war correspondent who is best known for his stories about ordinary American soldiers during World War II. When Okinawa was returned to Japanese control after the war, the Ernie Pyle monument was one of only three American memorials allowed to remain in place. Pyle was among the few American civilians killed during the war to be awarded the Purple Heart. Carol Johnson (1916-2003) was a celebrated illustrator whose career spanned more than 35 years. He was a lead illustrator for the New York advertising agency Ogilvy and Mather and created cover images for numerous magazines, including Boys? Life, Colliers and American Weekly.
