Beschreibung
Two very elegantly designed volumes about the lives and times of so-called Queens of Society in England and France from approximately the 16th to 19th centuries. Both volumes feature b/w photogravure portraits (vol I: 8, vol II: 10), each of which has a tissue guard with the individual's name in red ink. Each book also includes a red cloth bookmark and gilt top edges. The boards of both feature silver-gilt floral decorative borders framing a gold-gilt image of three feathers bound by a ribbon (main image). Condition - the following comments apply to both books unless stated otherwise: mild edge wear to dark navy blue cloth boards, slight bending at corners, and fraying at head and tail of spine. The gold gilt image on Vol. II has faded in places (main image). Internally: mild to moderate tanning with very occasional spotting; slightly more pronounced in second volume. Vol. I: front endpapers are a little loose and the front pastedown/first free endpaper hinge has a discreet tape repair. Vol I: pp. 451/8vo. Vol II: pp. 439/8vo. Undated. Vol. I opens with a Preface to the Second Edition, Vol. II has no preface but is assumed to be of similar vintage. Please note that the combined weight of these books and, depending on destination, may result in a request for an additional payment to cover shipping/postage charges.
