Hard cover without dust Jacket. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. A nice, tight clean copy. Mission Dust jacket. Orange cloth. Corners are bumped, slight staining on spine and front cover and cover is faded toward the edges. The pages have browned, but the text is clear. "We sometimes say that humorists try hard to be funny. What we usually mean is that they have not tried quite hard enough. For no one minds what labors lie behind the conceits that bring on laughter. But we do mind having the labor made apparent: we seldom enjoy seeing scaffolding. E. B. White may have struggled prodigiously to make some of the sketches in his new book, "Quo Vadimus? Or the Case for the Bicycle," sound as irresponsible as they do sound. If so, that is his affair. It is in no way apparent. His phrases drift into patterns as lightly as snowflakes. A certain clarity of style, a certain distinction of mind, set Mr. White's sketches apart from the writing of most contemporary American humorists. (That should be a fighting word.) And yet he uses very much the same sort of material. He parodies the same popular targets, he unstuffs the same pomposities. He knows very well that we are always ready to laugh (at least once more) at such set pieces as business efficiency devices. Or the Manhattanites yearning for a (remodeled) place in the country. Or chastening experiences with the superior wisdom of dogs and little children. The question in Mr. White's title remains unanswered. That's fair enough--since it's a terrible title at best. But do not overlook "Q----V----?" It's a very fine book.". Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 004387
