Slightly later three-quarter red morocco and marbled boards, spines gilt. Boards rubbed and shelfworn, worn at spine ends and corners. Front hinge of first volume broken but text holding strong to binding by rear hinge. Light scattered staining and soiling, small closed tear to top edge of one leaf in first volume. Contemporary unlabeled bookplate on front pastedown of each volume. A very good set overall. The author emigrated to America from Italy in 1773 to introduce the cultivation of grapes and olives to the United States. He became a neighbor of Thomas Jefferson in Virginia, settling near Monticello at Jefferson's request, and this association led to their long friendship and the author's acquaintance with Franklin and Adams. A staunch Republican, he took an active role in the Independence movement. In this work Mazzei outlines the history of the American colonies, the causes of the Revolution, and the economy and government of the United States. Also discussed are Native Americans, slavery, emigration, and the Society of the Cincinnati. He also comments on some of the most significant works recently published in America, and is particularly complimentary of Jefferys' Atlas and his eminent neighbor's Notes on the State of Virginia. An important work which Dumas Malone characterizes as "probably the most reliable of all the works of the period on the United States."
