O Padroado era uma delegação de poderes concedida pelos Papas, através de Bulas, a autoridades temporais, pela qual um governante passava a ser o patrono e protector da Igreja numa determinada região, dispondo de obrigações e direitos. No caso dos reis de Portugal estes tinham o dever de promover a expansão da Fé Cristã, através do apoio ao envio de missionários e ao zelo pelos interesses da Igreja no Oriente. Por outro lado tinham o direito de apresentar candidatos a cargos eclesiásticos. Com a perda de influência de Portugal no Oriente, a partir do século XVII, tornou-se cada vez mais difícil cumprir os deveres previstos no Padroado, mas a Monarquia Portuguesa continuou a querer exercer os seus direitos. Roma criou a Congregação De Propaganda Fide, no século XVII, para enviar missionários para o Oriente para locais que pertenciam ao Padroado, mas onde Portugal já não conseguia garantir a respectiva evangelização. Daqui foi nascendo um conflito que se agudizou e arrastou até ao século XX. A presente obra é uma importante fonte para o estudo desta questão durante o século XIX e versa sobre a questão da assistência espiritual a católicos em territórios ingleses. Two books in one. Printed at the Lusitanian Press. 1858-1859. The ?Padroado? [Patronage] was a delegation of powers granted by the Popes through bulls to secular authorities, by which a ruler would become the patron and protector of the Church in a certain region, with rights and obligations. In what concerns the kings of Portugal they had the duty to promote the expansion of Christian faith by supporting missionaries? voyages and watching over the interests of the Churn in the East. On the other hand, they were entitled to nominate candidates to ecclesiastical offices. With the Portugal losing its influence on the East from the 17th century on, it became harder to fulfil the duties previewed in the Padroado, but the Portuguese Monarchy still wanted to exercise its rights. Rome created the De Propaganda Fide Congregation in the 17th century to send missionaries to the East to places that belong to the Padroado but where Portugal could no assure the evangelization. This started a conflict that increased and lasted until the 20th century. This work is an important source for the study of this issue during the 19th century and approaches the issue of the spiritual assistance to Catholics in English territories.
