SECOND EDITION, rewritten and enlarged, 1873, 8vo, approximately 185 x 120 mm, 7¼ x 4¾ inches, grapes vignette on title page, frontispiece (8 woodcut images of deposits in bottled wine), woodcut head- and tailpieces, pages: xii, 180, plus 6 pages of adverts for wine and wine making accessories, bound in original publisher's blind stamped dark green cloth over limp card cut flush, gilt vignette (repeat of title) and gilt lettering to upper cover, spine plain, yellow endpapers, printed on recto and verso with adverts for wines, glasses, and wine makers' apparatus. Top of spine has small neat repair, spine slightly wrinkled, corners very slightly rubbed, inner paper hinges strengthened with close matching paper, bookseller's tiny blind stamp to front endpaper, plus pencil name, slight faint foxing to margins of title page and next 2 leaves and occasionally in top margins, pale browning to inner margins of 2 pages, binding crease to 1 leaf, no loss of legibility, a couple of pencil marks and 2 brief pencil notes on page 175, tiny damp stain to inner corners of plate, small label on last pastedown (Richard S. Wormser 22 W 48th Street New York). A good copy. First published as a series of articles in a medical journal in 1863-64, and in book form in 1865. In this 2nd edition "not much of the original remains" (Preface). The author, a member of the Royal College of Physicians, was interested in intemperance and bought cheap wine for himself in order to ascertain what the public could buy for a moderate price. His chief interest became the usefulness of wines to the medical profession in the restoration of health. Chapters on wines available after Gladstone lifted the duty in 1862, the nature of wine and its effects, classification, wines of France and the rest of Europe, Australia including What missionaries should know, sparkling and fortified wines.
