But it is also significant for its role in the sectional crisis. Soon after Taylor's election "some southern Whigs began to realize that Taylor would probably not oppose the Wilmot Priviso," banning slavery from the Mexican cession. The key signal occurred when Taylor sent "King, a Georgian, to California, with instructions to encourage the organization of a government which would apply directly for statehood. If this took place, it would enable California to by-pass the territorial stage, during which southerners claimed a protected status for slavery, and to reach at once the stage at which slavery could be prohibited by state action."
