It focuses on basic information about radioactivity, nuclear reactions, properties and measurement of ionizing radiation, nuclear energy and technology, and their environmental aspects. Topics related to nuclear energy, risk of ionizing radiation for man, and environmental aspects of radioactive wastes, which continue to be popular among a wider public, have been expanded to provide information not only to university students, but also to a wider readership to offer answers to often asked topical questions that continue to be the target of frequently unjustified criticism from opponents of nuclear and radiation technologies.
The subjects covered in this book have their foundations in a blend of physics, biology, chemistry, and engineering. In relation to radiation and nuclear technologies, economics, psychology and politics take their share of credit as well. Having this in mind, and trying to cover as many topics as possible with numerous applications of radioactivity and ionizing radiation, and striving not to produce too extensive a text, some subjects had to be discussed in a simplified form. For the same reason, only a few, arbitrarily selected examples out of many were used to illustrate some facts and methods, and only simple mathematics and accompanying theory necessary for understanding the principles were utilized. The reader will find more information in the sources shown in the "Recommended Reading" sections at the end of each chapter and in the list of electronic information sources. Emphasis was laid on more recent literature, predominantly review articles published in English. Each chapter is concluded with a set of problems.
About the Author: Jiri Hala
Dr. Hála, Professor of Nuclear Chemistry, has been teaching courses in nuclear and radiochemistry (including laboratory courses), environmental radioactivity, chemistry of radioactive elements, radioanalytical methods, applications of isotopes in biological sciences, and general chemistry at the School of Science, Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic for forty years. He also taught in Malta and at McLennan Community College, Waco, Texas. His research activities involved applications of radioisotopes in the chemistry of complex compounds in solutions, and in solvent extraction chemistry. He published 51 scientific papers and 10 review articles, is author of three Czech textbooks (Isotopes in Biology, Laboratory Course in Nuclear Chemistry, Radioactivity and Ionizing Radiation), and co-author of Czech and English textbook on Nuclear Chemistry. He served as national representative on IUPAC Commission V.8 (Solubility Data), and has been editor and main contributor to four volumes of the IUPAC Solubility Data Series project.
James D. Navratil
Dr. Navratil has more than 30 years of experience in nuclear and radiochemistry, acquired primarily at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Rocky Flats Plant and through his assignments with the International Atomic Energy Agency, DOE’s Energy Technology Engineering Center, and the Idaho National Engineering & Environmental Laboratory. Dr. Navratil’s accomplishments have earned him numerous honors including Rockwell Engineer of the Year, American Chemical Society Colorado Section Award, two IR-100 Awards, and three society fellowships. He has several patents to his credit and has given more than 300 presentations, including lectures in more than 80 countries. He has co-edited or co-authored 21 books, published more than 250 scientific publications, and has served on the editorial boards of over a dozen journals. Since January 2000, Dr. Navratil has been a Professor of Environmental Engineering and Science at Clemson University. His other teaching experience includes serving as a Chemical Training Officer in the U.S. Army Reserve (1964-70), teaching general chemistry at the University of Colorado (1976-78), and teaching chemical engineering and extractive metallurgy subjects at the University of New South Wales, Australia (1987-90). He also served as an Affiliate Professor at the Colorado School of Mines (1985-87), University of Idaho (1998-2000), and Clemson University (1999-2000).
