Interior of book is in excellent condition, save for normal browning to the edges of the pages, consistent with age. Glassine cover sheets over color lithographs are present and intact. Binding remains solid, although somewhat rubbed at the extremities. This edition of the 1897 French adventure and romance novel of contraband runners in the Basque region of France was originally published in illustrated wrappers, later bound with three-quarter deep blue leather binding, marbleized endpapers, and gilt top edge. About a dozen charming stencil colored lithographic illustrations are bound in, followed by an uncolored copy of the same image. Original wrapper covers are also bound in. Text is in French. 262 pages. The illustrator, Pierre Brissaud (1885-1964) was a prominent Art Deco illustrator, painter, and engraver, perhaps best known for his stencil pochoir prints for the Parisien fashion magazine Gazette du Bon Ton.
