Now in an archival quality (removable) Brodart cover. Pictorial history of the Waitemata in the artist's own paintings and sketches, with extended captions, from the first European landing through sail, steam, container ships and yachting. Plates include the barque Pamir, the Chilean training ship Esmeralda, the container ship ACT 4, the Sunderland flying boat at Hobsonville, and the Baltic ketch Fri, sketched in 1972 before she sailed to Mururoa in 1973 to protest French atomic tests and was boarded by the French Navy. A color chart illustrates racing yacht classes with their designers. Gainor Wilmott Jackson (1926-1997) grew up in Devonport fifty yards from the harbour entrance. According to the jacket, his grandfather and uncle were professional painters; he attended spare-time classes at Auckland's Elam School of Art and worked as an importer, producing this series at 48. He also co-wrote Concrete Boatbuilding (1969). He thanks his brother Gifford, the industrial designer Gifford Jackson (1922-2015). Author's photograph on rear flap by Marti Friedlander.
