(SOUTH CAROLINA REGIMENTAL). TANNER, W[illiam] R., Sr. Reminiscences of the War Between the States. [Cowpens, SC]: 1931. 1st ed. [23] pp. Portrait frontis. Orig. printed wrappers, housed in custom cloth box. Just a hint of light damping to spine, else, fine. Dornbusch II, 927. Not in Turnbull. Rare. A second edition was issued circa 1950, however it retained the original date of 1931 on the title page. Few people have seen either edition, let alone both (as we have), and the two are often confused with one another. The important differences are these: the 1st edition is composed of 23 unnumbered pages, preceded by a dedication leaf and portrait following the title page and included in the pagination. The 2nd edition also bears additions to the roll and list of officers at the end. The first edition is about 1/2 inch smaller than the second, and bound in pale, green-gray wrappers; the second edition appears in brighter, light green wrappers. Dornbusch saw only the second edition, but mistook it for the first, evidently assuming 1931 to be the true printing date. OCLC locates 11 copies of both editions combined. The only copy recorded by OCLC of a first edition is held by the University of South Carolina. In our experience, the first edition is very rare and the second is scarce in the trade. We have seen only one other copy of the first edition and several copies of the second. Roll and list of officers, pp. [19-23]. Tanner served in the 13th South Carolina Infantry. The regiment was present throughout the war in the Army of Northern Virginia. They participated in most of the major engagements including Gettysburg. The author was wounded at Five Forks and Shaprsburg. He entered the service as a private in Spartansburg, SC, and he eventually attained the rank of lieutenant. This privately printed work and Welch's Letters are the only eyewitness accounts of the history of this unit. The crudely printed pamphlet is filled with the author's euphemisms and misspellings, and his narrative is delightful. Dornbusch II, 927. Not in Turnbull. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 52200
