Beschreibung
A smart early edition of this work defending Gothic architecture, by a leading figure in the Gothic revival movement. The uncommon second edition. In the publisher's original full embossed cloth binding, by Edmonds & Remnants. The work of Sir Gilbert Scott a prolific English Gothic revival architect, chiefly associated with the design, building and renovation of churches and cathedrals. First published in 1857, Scott wrote this work with the aim of presenting the case for using Gothic as a style not just for churches and schools, but for houses and public buildings. This second edition contains a new section on the relative expense of building in the Gothic and classical styles, occasioned by Scott's involvement in the prolonged struggle over the architectural style for a new Foreign Office building in Whitehall. With two pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear of the book. Lacking the other thirty pages. With the previous owner's neat ink signature to the title page. In the original cloth binding. Externally, very smart with light shelf wear to the extremities. Light marks to the boards. Internally, binding slightly strained but still very firm. Pages age-toned but otherwise very bright and clean with the odd spot throughout. Previous owner's ink signature to the title page. Very Good Indeed. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 843G56
