3 works bound in one vol, 8vo (222 x 140 mm), pp 6; 71; 74; the second two works with 4 lithographic plates each; fine copies, uncut, the third work unopened, in plum-coloured cloth decorated in blind and titled in gilt on upper cover.First editions of these rare, privately printed pamphlets concerning the purported invention of photography by Matthew Boulton, the author's grandfather. Matthew Boulton (1728-1809), along with his partner James Watt, was a member of the Lunar Society that included Priestley, Wedgwood, and other inventors and experimenters. Wedgwood was in communication with the members concerning certain proto-photographic processes. The occasion of these pamphlets was that in 1863 W. P. Smith of the Patent Office presented to the Photographic Society evidence that Matthew Boulton had discovered photography in the 1770s. Smith's claims were based on documents and images found in the library of Soho House, the late Boulton's office and residence, outside Birmingham. The three pamphlets by Boulton present increasingly detailed refutations of Smith's evidence.Gernsheim calls for 7 plates in the second title, but is in error. Only four are referred to in the text, the first as 'opposite' and only the following three, numbered for some reason 5-7, are referred to by those numbers.Gernsheim 876, 891; the third title not in Gernsheim: COPAC lists Bodley for the first, BL and Bodley for the second, and no record for the third; OCLC has Getty for the first, Toronto, Yale, Getty, Arizona, National Gallery Washington D.C., and Eastman House for the second but calling for 56 pages only (and four plates); and Toronto, Yale, Clark Art Institute, Harvard, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and New York Public Library for the third.
