Beschreibung
This work consists of reports from the Army Engineers to the 54th Congress, 2d Session of the House of Representatives, Document No. 2. This is Volume II ONLY of three volumes, and picks up where the preceding volume left off in both appendix succession, and pagination. For example, after the introductory pages, what would usually start with "page 1" starts on page 3403, and begins with flytitle "Appendixes to the Report of the Chief of Engineers, United States Army. (Continued.)". This volume then picks up with "Appendix WW" as the first document in the book. The following appendices included are: 1) Appendix WW, "Report of the Mississippi River Commission"; 2) Appendix XX, "Report of the Missouri River Commission"; 3) Appendix YY, "Report of the California Debris Commission; 4) Appendix ZZ, "Occupancy of and Injury to Public Works by Corporations and Individuals"; 5) Appendix AAA, "Reports of Maj. Chas. J. Allen, Corps of Engineers"; 6) Appendix BBB,"Report of Capt. D. D. Gaillard, Corps of Engineers"; 7) Appendix CCC, "Report of Col. GH. H. Elliot, Corps of Engineers (Retired), on Improving Dalecarlia Receiving Reservoir, District of Columbia"; 8) Appendix DDD, "Report of Col. John M. Wilson, Corps of Engineers"; Appendix EEE, "Survey of Northern and Northwestern Lakes"; 9) Appendix FFF, "Explorations and Surveys in Military Divisions and Departments". Text also includes "Laws Affecting the Corps of Engineers, Fifty-Fourth Congress, First Session, 1895-96. Each appendix includes numerous details on their respective topics, including just under 70 total folding plates of maps (large and small), engravings, photographs and data tables. The folding plates are fascinating -- some spanning over 3' long -- and include maps of waterways, depth diagrams, improvements of harbors, profiles of dikes and cross-sections of rivers, rectification of shore lines, drawings construction and operation of a sweeping apparatus searching for shores, and other diagrams, tables and drawings of the sort, circa late 1800's. Hardcover. Bound in green linen cloth with gilt lettering on the spine. The exterior of this book is in "fair" condition. The cover is worn and although present, the spine is detached from leaves, exposing inner netting and stitches within the actual book's binding edge. Cloth is faded with 3" tear on the front cover and wear on corners and edges. While attached, cloth is pulling loose from the boards, (particularly at the foot where it has detached). The text pages and maps, however, are in very good condition and appear complete. Title page is detached and laid in. Leaves are yellowed with some foxing throughout, and some ink staining at bottom of approx a dozen pages at the front; yet text is very legible. Back flyleaf detached and laid in. Indexed, 1-32 pp.; [xxii] 3403-4196 pp. Worn, yet incredible, historic content. Full refund if not satisfied. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 064688
