Childhood trauma does not just leave memories. It installs a belief system. Long before you had the language to question it, abuse, neglect, or chronic fear taught you a story about who you are, what you deserve, and how the world works. That story was never yours. It was written by circumstances you did not choose, by people who failed to protect you, and by a developing brain that had no other way to make sense of what was happening. This workbook gives you the structured, evidence-based tools to examine that story and rewrite it on your own terms.

Grounded in Cognitive Processing Therapy

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is one of the most rigorously studied treatments for PTSD, supported by over 30 randomized controlled trials and recommended by the VA, the APA, and the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies. This workbook adapts the full CPT protocol specifically for adults healing from childhood abuse, neglect, and developmental trauma, drawing on the CPT-SA model developed for survivors of childhood sexual abuse. Every chapter is anchored in peer-reviewed research with full citations provided.

A Complete 15-Chapter Workbook You Actively Complete

This is not a book you simply read. It is a structured program with over 90 hands-on exercises including guided worksheets, self-assessments, daily practice logs, journaling prompts, checklists, and action plans. Each exercise includes clear instructions and real writing space. The workbook moves through four parts: understanding how childhood trauma creates stuck points, learning the CPT skills to challenge those beliefs, applying cognitive restructuring across the five core themes of safety, trust, power and control, esteem, and intimacy, and building a maintenance plan for ongoing recovery.

Built for the Unique Challenges of Childhood Trauma

Adult-onset trauma disrupts an existing belief system. Childhood trauma builds the belief system from the ground up. This workbook addresses that critical difference by incorporating developmental considerations, attachment theory, and the specific cognitive patterns that form when abuse or neglect occurs during the years the brain is still being constructed. Exercises are adapted for survivors who may have limited emotional vocabulary, identity-level stuck points, and beliefs so old they feel like unchangeable facts.

What You Will Work Through

The CPT stuck point framework across all five themes. The ABC worksheet for connecting triggers to beliefs to emotions. The ten challenging questions adapted for childhood-origin beliefs. Patterns of problematic thinking and how childhood makes them habitual. The full Challenging Beliefs Worksheet with guided examples for each theme. Impact Statements that measure your cognitive shifts over time. A maintenance plan and quarterly check-in system for sustained recovery. This workbook gives you the complete CPT toolkit, adapted for how childhood trauma shapes the adult mind.
