50 years ago Gavin Maxwell went to live on the west coast of Scotland, in an abandoned house on a shingle of beach. He wrote his immortal classic about it, Ring of Bright Water. His chronicle of life with the wild creatures which inhabited that landscape, and especially the domesticated otters who shared it continued on beyond that famous book. The rest of the story is contained in two later books. This story has never been offered before in a single narrative of Gavin Maxwell's own words.

Gavin Maxwell was born in 1914. In 1945 he bought the small Hebridean island of Soay and tried to establish a shark fisher. This resulted in his first book Harpoon at a Venture.
