Beschreibung
John Lothrop Motley was an American writer primarily known for this history of the Dutch Republic. He traveled widely and did his research for the text in Belgium, Germany and The Hague. The work was considered highly controversial as it seemed favorable to the side of independence. Most notably, Motley served a crucial role in keeping Europe out of the American Civil War. This particular set is a new edition in 3 volumes, typeset and published in Great Britain. It was awarded to Claude Francis Dark as First School Prize for the Sixth Form by William Moory, Headmaster. When this was bound, the first signature in the first volume seems a little tight and has some movement away from the spine.(see photos). Volume III cleanly split along with binding at front (please reference last photograph). Otherwise, a very pretty set with a medallion from the Philological School and its symbol on each volume done in gilt along with banded gilt decorations on the spine. This was considered a comprehensive and important history at the time and Motley made several important historical contributions including his role in the Civil War. Very Good Condition: 8vo, 3 volumes, leather binding, marbled endpapers, gilt medallion of the school on the front along with gilt decorations on the spine. Some spotting to the leather around the edges. Volume I has split along the spine on top board and previously mentioned problems in the first signature. Other two volumes have spotting but no other problems that I see. The Rise of the Dutch Republic: A History by John Lothrop Motley. London: Frederick Warne and Co. 1886. COLH1886BEFA.
