It was the first fully independent Dutch nation state, and was established after an uprising against the Spanish rule in the Netherlands by the provinces of Groningen, Frisia, Overijssel, Guelders, Utrecht, Holland, and Zeeland (the 'Union of Utrecht'). John L. Motley was an American author, best known for his historiographical works on the Netherlands.Bound in a full calf school prize binding awarded by Devonport, Stone & Stonehouse High School for Girls to Evelyn Ellen Hope for Mathematics Form V in 1879. Complete with half title. Featuring a frontispiece. In a full calf school prize binding, with five raised bands and intricate gilt tooling to the spine, marbled edges and endpapers, school emblem embossed in gilt to the front board. Externally smart with minor shelf wear and minor rubbing to the boards and spine, minor damp marking to the boards. Prize bookplate to the front pastedown, dated 1879. Internally, firmly bound.
