Why is the situation in the Third World Countries particularly grim? In these Regions it is common to find several Industries clustered together, with towns and villages lying in close proximity. Even when an industry sets itself up sonic Distance away from populous areas, the griming neighbourhoods soon REACH its periphery. In such settings the impact of industrial accident on human lives as well as Property is always severe. How to deal with this situation? Attempts to Search for answers to this question have given rise to the field of risk assessment in chemical process industries (RACPI). Finding ways and Means to prevent accidents, and to cushion the damage if accidents do occur, are integral parts of this new Science of RACPI. The Government of India has acknowledged the hazards of Bhopal like accidents posed by chemical process industries and has made it mandatory that all industries conduct elaborate risk assessment. Apart from being in the interest of public welfare, risk assessment is also extremely important for the welfare of the concerned industry because accidents can damage the industry`s Infrastructure causing enormous direct Loss in terms of Assets and indirect loss ill terms of hindrance in production. .Sometimes an accident can even totally destroy an industry.
