[Castaway Collection] TWO NINETEENTH-CENTURY COPIES, plus a selection of related modern books. Eight volumes in total, all octavos of various sizes. 1) 'Robinson Crusoe' pp.[2] 238 [2]. With eight wood-engraved illustrated plates, including a frontispiece. In a mid-twentieth-century binding of quarter tan calf, with gilt titles to a red label, blind decoration to spine, and marbled paper over boards. All edges untrimmed. Toned with occasional spots throughout, otherwise internally clean. Light stains to spine. Very good. 2) 'Robinson Crusoe' pp.[2] vi; 538 [2]. Contemporary brown full calf for Edinburgh Academy, recently re-backed in tan calf, with the original spine showing gilt titles to a red label, raised bands, and further gilt decoration, laid over. Greek and Latin school mottos stamped in gilt to boards. All edges and endpapers marbled. School prize plate to front pastedown, dated 1841. Toned, with occasional spotting and pencil notations throughout. Hinges repaired with strips of brown cloth. Moderate general wear to binding, now restored to a robust, attractive condition. Very good. 3) 'A Narrative of the Adventures of Alexander Selkirk and Others, on which Defoe is believed to have founded his famous Romance', by Rev. H.C. Adams, pp.256. With a woodcut frontispiece. Publisher's tan cloth with titles and decoration in black, red, yellow and green to spine and upper. Hinges split but holding, with a bookseller's label to front pastedown. Gently toned with a few minor marks, otherwise internally clean. Fairly heavy wear to cloth, with spine nearly illegible. Good. 4) 'The Real Robinson Crusoe, being the life and strange surprising adventures of Alexander Selkirk of Largo, Fife, Mariner', by R.L. Megroz, pp.[14] 244 [2]. With eight black and white illustrated plates, and maps to endpapers. Publisher's grey cloth with black titles to spine. With the typographic dust-jacket, priced at 12/6. Blue ink gift inscription to first blank, dated 1943. Heavy spotting to edges and endpapers, otherwise internally clean. Jacket toned with light chipping and a few closed tears to edges. Very good. 5) 'Crusoe's Captain, being the Life of Woodes Rogers, Seaman, Trader, Colonial Governor', by Brian Little, pp.240. With five black and white illustrated plates, including a frontispiece, as well as four maps. Publisher's navy cloth, with gilt titles to spine and upper. With the blue illustrated dust-jacket, priced at 21s. Heavy spotting to edges, otherwise internally clean. Some light wear and creasing to jacket edges. Very good. 6) 'The Monarch of Juan Fernandez', by Martin Ballard, pp.192. With in-text illustrations and a sketch-map frontispiece by A.R. Whitear. Publisher's orange cloth with gilt titles to spine. With the illustrated dust-jacket, priced at 18s. Spotting to edges, otherwise internally clean. Jacket sunned to spine, with light general wear. Very good. 7) 'Seatoun of Largo, a collection of Victorian Photographs and Largo Today', by Ivy Jardine, pp.135 [1]. Heavily illustrated with black and white photographs. Publisher's light blue cloth, with gilt titles to spine and upper. With the blue photographic dust-jacket, priced at £6.95. Spotting to endpapers, otherwise internally clean. Boards bowed. Moderate general wear, including some closed tears, to jacket. Good. 8) 'The Man Who Was Robinson Crusoe', by Rick Wilson, pp.xii; 164. With a suite of four double-sided colour photographic plates. Publisher's colour-illustrated soft covers, priced at £12.95. Lightly handled, with some sunning to spine and front cover. Very good. A collection concerning the 1719 castaway classic and its sequels, including two copies of the original book from the nineteenth-century, and six twentieth-century books on Alexander Selkirk-the main inspiration for Defoe's character.
