Four hard cover volumes with gilt titles and gilt and black decorations on red cloth bindings; each volume has a rather faded spine and some mild to moderate wear (see photographs) including fading of boards. Printed for subscribers from the plates of the Original Edition: 1) Mr Romford's Hounds, xii, 405 pages, 3 page illustrations, 24 colour engravings on steel by John Leech, H K Browne, & c. 2) Plain or Ringlets, x, 398 pages, 8 of 12 colour plates are missing although frontispiece and colour vignette on title page are present, and includes 8 extra illustrations and 43 vignettes. 3) Ask Mamma, viii, 423 pages some unseparated, 13 full page colour engravings on wood including frontispiece and numerous further engravings on wood in the text with colour vignette on title page. 4) 265 pages, and at rear Robert Smith Surtees, Sketch of His Career 30 pages, John Leech , His illustrations to Surtees' Novels, etc., 30 pages. The interiors of the 4 volumes are generally clean with numerous unseparated pages. There are 2 additional colour plates (from another volume: The Two Strings and Rosa At Mayfield. Although undated these subscription volumes are presumed to have been published in 1888 and are in reasonably good condition with only Plain or Ringlets missing any illustrations.
