Venetian Edition, Volume II only. Turquoise cloth boards with decorative peacock feather embellishments in gilt to the spine and part of boards. Top edge of textblock gilt. Slight wear to corners, edges, and spine ends. Lower corners bumped. Beautiful floral decorated endpapers with gilt accents. Frontispiece of Girolamo Savonarola with tissue guard intact. Front hinge and binding loose at p. 12, but holding. Previous owner name in pencil on front free endpaper. This volume includes Chapters 32 through 51 of the story. Very Good. The Girolamo Savonarola painting used for the frontispiece was originally done by Fra Bartolomeo, a famous Renaissance artist. Savonarola was an Italian Dominican friar and plays a large part in this historical novel of Florence during the Renaissance. The author, Mary Ann Evans, used a pen name so as to not be stereotyped as a romance novelist or have her fiction writing be judged in relation to her well-known work as an editor and critic.
