First Canadian Edition, in original maroon leather binding, with gilt vignette to front, and gilt titles to front and spine. Bevelled edges, slightly bumped and lightly rubbed; short (10 mm) closed crack at upper front gutter. A clean and supple binding, with nice bright gilt titles and decoration. Original dark green endpapers -- hinges firm. Mild foxing to margins and front and rear leaves. Otherwise a clean, tight and unmarked book. Rebacked polished green morocco leather with very bright gilt farm scene embossed in cover. Gilt type on spine with some gilt chipping, o gone in Moddie name. Original dark green end papers. Repairs made to cover and endpapers and now in very good+ condition. Internally, a very few pages with very light foxing and very clean otherwise. A beautiful book in near fine condition. The book is advertised on the title page as being available in two bindings, cloth at $1.75 and leather at $2.25. This copy is the more expensive leather version of 1871 first Canadian (MacClear) published book. First time this title was published in Canada with Susanna revising and updating with a very upbeat preface promoting Canada. One of the scarcest 19th century editions of this classic. "This new (1871) edition was printed by Hunter Rose and published jointly by them, Dawson Brothers of Montreal, and Thomas MacClear of Toronto in late 1871. Susanna received '200 dollars for the publication of 2,500 copies and a Royalty of 4 cents on every copy they may require over that number" quoted from Roughing it in the bush, or, Life in Canada By Susanna Moodie, Carl Ballstadt 1988.
