It tells the story of a rich upper-class French widow who moves to Senegal in the 1930s after her plan to marry a French Captain falls through. Depressed, solitary and keeping to herself, she only renews her acquaintance with the world when she befriends people of great convictions and principles among both the local Senegalese and the wives of a few colonials resident in Saint-Louis. She gains their esteem and discovers the age-old truth that money won't buy you happiness. Meaningful relationships would, but they are much more difficult to establish and to maintain. An enjoyable read, distancing itself from the stereotyping of the time, this novel proposes an interesting take of women's dreams and preoccupations in France and in the colonies. It also advocates tolerance toward the wide range of religious beliefs co-existing in Senegal and expressing people's universal, yet idiosyncratic, search for the meaning of life.
