Bell, William Dixon l (1865-1951): THE SACRED SCIMITER. Chicago: Goldsmith, 1938. Goldsmith did not indicate editions. Very Good or better hardcover, yellow binding with image of scimitar under title; in chipped Near Very Good dustwrapper. Boys' spy novel set largely in the Middle East. The boy aviators encounter British secret agents, "one clearly modeled on a famous character invented by John Buchan, namely Sandy Arbuthnot," according to Dr. Rory Coker (a leading authority on pseudoscience and legerdemain at the University of Texas); and Arabic nationalists eager to expel just such foreigners. The Islamists are treated realistically and not as cartoon villains; racism was so common in 1930s boys' adventures that it is almost a miracle that this story treats foreigners sympathetically and not as villains.
