Floyd (1806-81), lawyer, judge, publisher, and Democratic member of the New York State Assembly and U.S. House of Representatives, from Long Island, New York, with his bookplate. An important collection of pertinent 18th-century political speeches, including those by Burke and Pitt on the taxation of American colonies, as well as various events pertaining to the American Revolution and Irish liberty. Chapman, clearly impressed by European oration, posits that his collection "is an attempt, and the only one, to perpetuate Modern Eloquence."
