Priores Quartuor Initio Operis Habentur; Quintus Vero, seu Ultimus, ad Calcem Rejectus est. - by R.P. Joannis Cabassutii - Aquisextiensis, Presbyteri Congregationis Oratorii Domini Jesu. Printed in Venetiis (Venice) by Balleoniana, in 1772 (MDCCLXXII) . Superiorum Permissu. This being PAGE 117/118. Contains 91 lines of Latin text printed in double column. Single page, printed on both sides, recto & verso. Laid paper. Large FOLIO size leaf. In VERY GOOD condition. The author of this title, Jean Cabassut (Cabassutii/Cabassutius) (1604-1685) was a French Oratorian theologian. He was born at Aix & entered the Oratory at the age of 21. Though devoted to his labour he was always ready to interrupt even his most favourite study to assist the needy. He had taught canon law at Avignon for some time, when Cardinal Grimaldi, Archbishop of Aix, took him as companion to Rome, where Father Cabassut remained about 18 months. Returning to Aix, where he spent the rest of his life, he became a distinguished writer on questions of ecclesiastical history, canon law, & moral theology. St. Alphonsus considers him classical. He was a probabiliorist in his moral solutions. The following work is worthy of note: "Notitia Conciliorum" (Lyons, 1668). Cardinal Grimaldi induced the writer to enlarge this work & publish it under the title, "Notitia ecclesiastica historiarum, conciliorum et canonum invicem collatorum", etc. (Lyons, 1680, & other dates; Munich, 1758; Tournai, 1851, 3 vols.). Often modified & enlarged, it was once, under the title "Cabassutius", an authority for the history of councils. A compendium of the "Notitia" appeared at Louvain, 1776. The printer of this title, Typographia Balleoniana, was an 18th century publisher based in Venice, Italy. This magnificent large folio-size example of early letterpress printing is from a substantial collection of material which was only recently unearthed in Budapest. These pages sat dormant for over 250 years, concealed in a Hungarian cellar. They survived multiple wars & decades of communist rule, in which countless books were destroyed. This original letterpress printed page comes with printed sheet with full details. A digital image of the title page of the original antiquarian book which this particular page came from will also be provided with purchase. A truly wonderful folio-size example of early letterpress printing. Ideal for framing. RARE & desirable.
