Beschreibung
Manuscript. Oblong folio sketch book. 10.5 x 7 inches. [2] + 9 + [1], i.e. 12 leaves with 2 blank. Preliminary dedication page to Lucie Humphrey. Bound in original grained morocco, decorated gilt. Extremities worn but fine interior. Financial calculations in ink on first free endpaper and pencil on verso of penultimate leaf. Illustrated by 11 leaves of ink sketches with captions, including title page, all on rectos of leaves with quotation from King Lear on verso opposite Shakespeare Cliff sketch. Charming humorous sketches of a journey made by William Oliver, 31 January - 1 February 1868, from Bournemouth and then by train from Christchurch to Waterloo, via Ringwood and Basingstoke. A night's stay in London at Berners Hotel precedes the journey via Tonbridge and along the coast to Dover, staying at 17 Marine Parade until after 15 February. The railway journey sketches include the ticket, waiting rooms, passengers' refreshments and luggage, amusing advertisements, travelling soldiers, railway staff and views of parts of a carriage and locomotive. The Dover scenes include coastal scenery, the Castle, soldiers, at Sunday service and a self portrait. Possible enigmatic references to his love life are the dedication, the sign 'Engaged' in the carriage window, 'Miss S - W - her Valentine' and to 'that girl, she belongs to me.'
