Folio (19 x 30cm). Full contemporary reverse calf, the boards decorated in blind, the spine with five raised bands and the number "3" in blind. The contents comprising a collection of 21 parliamentary acts dating between 1744 and 1747, with irregular printed and manuscript page numbering. Extensively annotated with much underling and verbal notations in ink manuscript in a contemporary hand and additionally interleaved with three manuscript indexes relating to smuggling, the window tax, and the tax on coaches (6pp.). Lacking a general title page, although irregularly bound as a collection of individual acts. The binding firm with some cracking to the front hinge and lower joints, a little loss to the spine ends, some minor worming to the lower board, and wear to the corners. The contents with the margins slightly trimmed (causing loss to the manuscript annotations in places) and with the first leaf a little loose and slightly worn at edges are otherwise in very good order. A bound volume of parliamentary acts from the reign of George II extensively annotated by a contemporary hand, likely someone in the legal profession. The volume notably contains two acts relating to smuggling and includes the 'Offences against Customs or Excise Act' of 1745 - the leading statute for smuggling law in the eighteenth century, which, as part of the 'Bloody Code', made the greatest effort to convict offenders and to sentence those convicted to death (headed in manuscript in the present volume "Arm'd smuglers punished by Death"). Also included in the present volume are acts relating to alcohol and tea duties, the window tax, the stealing of linen, the coach tax, disputes between masters and servants, the Militia Act of 1745, cattle disease, an act "to prevent excessive and deceitful gaming; and to restrain and prevent the excessive increase of horse races", and "an act more effectually to prevent profane cursing and swearing", amongst others.
