Dalziel after drawings by Richard Doyle, including eight full-page hand-coloured plates (frontispiece, engraved title, and six further images). Nice copy of the Doyle-illustrated fairy tale, with 35 wood-engraved plates by the Brothers Dalziel. Although originally composed in 1842, this version was not published until 1851 by Cundall. It was the first fairy tale written by Doyle and is scarce in this early new edition, usually only found in the posthumous 1888 manuscript facsimile. Scarce in the original cloth, especially in nice shape. viii, 56 pages, with 4 pages of adverts at the rear. Small loss to the base of the spine. Provenance: no signatures or bookplates. Approximately 8 ½ inches tall. Condition Report Externally Spine fair to good condition gilt titles to slightly faded and darkened spine, small section missing to the base. Joints good condition sound and solid. Corners good condition bumped and worn with minor fraying. Boards good condition cloth boards with gilt and blind decoration, gently marked and worn. Page edges good condition top edges slightly darkened, all gilt. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition sound. Paste downs good condition light blue. End papers good condition light blue, marks to the front. Title good condition tanned. Pages good condition tanned, small marks and minor foxing, 2 turned corners. Binding good condition attractive.
