His father, Muneyoshi, trained under Kamiizumi Hidetsuna, reputed to be the best swordsman in his time. In 1632, the year he was appointed Inspector General, Munenori~a contemporary of the equally famous warrior, Miyamoto Musashi, author of A BOOK OF FIVE RINGS ( Go Rin No Sho)~ completed his own treatise on swordsmanship, THE SWORD AND THE MIND (Heiho Kaden Sho). On its simplest level, THE SWORD AND THE MIND is an illuminating "how to" volume of swordsmanship maneuvers complete with step~by~step instructions for positioning, striking~with one and two swords~and defending yourself against an opponent. But on a deeper level this work is a philosophical and psychological guide to strategy. Long considered a classic of tactical wisdom, THE SWORD AND THE MIND is the first English translation of this great work. It is an extraordinary synthesis of ideas and experiences of three swordsmen: Hidetsuna, Muneyoshi, and Munenori. During the century and a half that these three men lived 1508~1646,Japan changed fundamentally. When Hidetsuna was born, the country was in the middle of the age of warring states. By the time Munenori died, the foundations of the Tokugawa shogunate had been firmly laid, and the domestic stability of the country has never been seriously broken since. The three men's lives illustrate the historic changes that took place throughout these years. THE SWORD AND THE MIND, as rendered by the P.E.N translation award winner, Hiroaki Sato, is their legacy to the modern reader. With more than twenty~five black~and~white illustrations, a glossary, chronology, bibliography, and annotations throughout, this important work also includes a discussion of the life and times of these three superior swordsmen and the cultural and philosophical meanings of the treatise.
