Folio, 8 x 12 inches. [xxxvi] + 324 + [4] pp. index. Separate title pages for Kalendarium Rusticum and Dictionarium Rusticum but pagination and register continuous. Bound in original full calf with blind stamped borders; spine in compartments with raised bands. Extremities very slightly worn with an expert repair to top of rear board adjoining spine, internally a very good crisp copy. Signature dated January 14th 1675-6 on front pastedown. A fine copy in completely original unsophisticated condition. Illustrated by engraved title, with ' Explanation of the Frontispiece,'opposite and by 6 large wood engravings in text. Decorated by Headpiece vignette, by initials and by additional title page vignettes. According to Blanche Henrey, John Worlidge of Petersfield 'is generally considered one of the most enlightened of the seventeenth-century writers on gardening and husbandry.' Fussell praises his 'systematising the knowledge of a subject current in his day.' with 'a measure of originality.' As it appeared in five editions from 1669, 'clearly it must have been a popular and acceptable work.' This second edition is considerably larger in content than the first of 1669 The most notable of the illustrations in the Systema Agriculturæ is Worlidge's design for an improved 'Engine for setting Corn' (a seed drill, p. 47). This is considerably earlier than Jethro Tull's famous invention. The work also has sections on Angling, Fouling, Hops, Cider, Bees, Saffron and Silk Worms, Etc. ESTC R218038. McDonald, 116-121.
