Buchbeschreibung E.P. Dutton and Company (c.1927), New York, 1927. Hardcover. Buchzustand: Very Good. Illustrated by John Vassos (illustrator). First Edition Thus. (no dust jacket) [light wear to boards, minor bumping to top corners, slight deterioration to top of spine, some browning/discoloration/fading of spine, extending a bit onto the back cover; internally very nice, with minor age-toning to edges of pages, a couple of small tears at top of dedication page; all 13 plates are present and in excellent condition]. (13 B&W plates) Bad-boy O.W.'s scandalous version of the Herod-Salome-John the Baptist kerfuffle, originally written and published in French (in 1893), and not given its stage premiere until 1896 (in Paris), when Wilde was midway through his prison term for "gross indecency." Even at the time this particular edition appeared, nearly 27 years after Wilde's death, the play still had not been publicly performed in England. (That happened, finally, in 1931.) The most famous (and still occasionally performed) offshoot of the play is Richard Strauss's opera of the same name, but there have been many incarnations, references and riffs in film, TV, and other performing arts. As far as the mainstream culture is concerned, the biggest takeway from the play was its elevation of Salome's "Dance of the Seven Veils" to the center of the action; in film, it's been performed most notably by Theda Bara and Rita Hayworth. Buchbeschreibung New York: E. P. Dutton, 1927, 1927. Small quarto. Original black boards, titles to spine gilt, black and gilt endpapers, top edge yellow, text embellished throughout with clusters of silver stars. With the pictorial dust jacket designed by Vassos. Contents very faintly toned. An excellent copy in a price-clipped jacket with a few tiny chips, partial toning to front panel and mild rubbing to rear panel. With 12 black and white plates by John Vassos. First edition illustrated by John Vassos, first printing. Romanian-born John Vassos (1898–1985) was an American industrial and graphic designer famous for designing the first commercially available television sets and many other popular products and logos. In 1926 Vassos's design for a cover illustration for a stage production of Salome caught the attention of publishers E. P. Dutton, resulting in the commission for this book, which would become the first of nine books illustrated by Vassos between 1927 and 1935. A delightful example of modernist book design, with beautiful endpapers and jacket designed by Vassos. Buchnummer des Verkäufers 106700
