A truly fascinating collection of fifty-two very scarce mid nineteenth century chapbooks, with accounts occult practices, classic fairy and folk tales, and humorous biographies all present. A sammelband set of mid nineteenth century chapbooks bound in two volumes, with each volume containing twenty-six individually paginated chapbooks, each with their own title page, and each running twenty-four pages in length.Present in volume I are:'The Story of Blue Beard; or, The Effects of Female Curiosity', a very scarce work dated between 1835 and 1849 by Jisc; 'The Sleeping Beauty of the Wood', 1852; 'The History of Ali Baba', c1840; 'The Life and Meritorious Transactions, of John Knox', c1850; 'The History of Paul Jones, the Pirate', c1840; 'Pathetic History of George Barnwell the London Apprentice', c1845; 'The Shepherdess of the Alps', dated c1845-55 via Jisc; The long pack, or, The Robbers Discovered' by James Hogg; the first edition of William Maginn's 'Daniel O'Rourke's Wonderful Voyage to the Moon'; 'Story of the Bitter Wedding'; 'The Irish Assassin' by Henry Vincent; 'The Life of Mansie Wauch'; 'The Wonderful Adventures of Sixteen British Seamen'; 'The History of Charles Jones'; 'Rob Roy, the Celebrated Highland Freebooter'; 'Blind Allan, A Tale'; 'History of Eugene Aram'; 'History of Jane Shore'; 'The Famous History of the Two Unfortunate Lovers, Hero and Leander'; 'The Celebrated History of the Renowned Robin Hood'; 'The History of Mary, the Maid of the Inn'; 'The Life and Wonderful Adventures of Robinson Crusoe'; 'The Life and Astonishing Adventures of Peter Williamson'; 'The Select Miscellany', and 'The Midford Galloway's Ramble' by Thomas Whittle.The final work in this volume is Dr. B. Franklin's very scarce angling work 'The Art of Swimming Rendered Easy'. Dated 1840-1850 by the NLS 'from examination of text and style [of] Illustration on title page'. This is the work of American founding father Benjamin Franklin.Volume II consists of Christian texts and historical and biographical studies, and concludes with three chapbooks on the occult:'The New Pictorial Bible', 1847, illustrated with vignettes to each page; 'The History of Abraham, Isaac & Jacob', illustrated; 'The History of Moses, illustrated; 'The Pilgrim's Progress'; 'A Wedding-Ring Fit for the Finger' by William Secker; 'The Pleasing Art of Money-Catching'; 'Description of a Voyage in the Coal Trade'; 'The Comical History of the King & the Cobbler'; 'The Comical History of Simple John'; 'The History of Thomas Hickthrift'; 'Stories of the two Drovers'; 'The Witty and Entertaining Exploits of George Buchan'; 'Entertaining History of John Cheap the Chapman'; 'The Comical Stories of Thrummy Cap and the Ghaist'; 'John Falkirk's Cariches'; 'The Life and Prophecies of Alexander Peden'; 'The Whole Proceedings of Jocky and Maggy's Courtship'; 'The History of Buchaven in Fifeshire'; 'The New Hocus Pocus!'; 'Mother Bunch's Golden Fortune-Teller'; 'The Golden Dreamer'; 'Napoleon Bonaparte's Book of Fate'; 'Grinning Made Easy'; 'Visits from the World of Spirits, being a Collection of Facts Relating to the Appearances of Ghosts, Spectres and Apparitions'; 'Satan's Invisible World Discovered', and finally 'The Laird of Cool's Ghost'.'Satan's Invisible World Discovered', credited to George Sinclair, devotes its first seventeen pages to the story of Major Weir of Edinburgh, a seemingly respectable man, who practiced witchcraft and was burned at the stake. His sister, with whom he had long committed incest, was also involved in his Satanic practice and revealed a witch's mark on her forehead. Unlike the Major, she confessed her sins to a minister before she was hung. The second story takes place near Chester, and concerns a pregnant young woman whose lover has her murdered. Her ghost repeatedly appears to a miller. He goes to a magistrate to report the crime and the murderers are brought to justice.
