First edition ? Doudecimo ( 115mm. ) Pp. [2] 3 - 160 [2] verso blank. Plates [1] engraved frontispiece of Rosa. P. [161] has a Sonnet. Leaf edges very lightly browned, couple of spots, small closed tear in the head of the title page. P. 53 / 54 ( sig C9 ) with a small closed tear in the head margin. Title page with a woodcut vignette of a bowl of fruit. Contemporary calf a little dusty, plain white endpapers. There are many reprints and counterfeits of this book, it is therefore difficult to state with confidence that our copy is the same as the first edition noted in - Limentani. Bibliografia della vitae delleopere di Salvator Rosa. Firenzi 1955. The copy offered here seems to have all the bibliographical points of the first edition, printed in [ Rome, Circa 1690 ]. The BL.Italian, 17th cent; II. copy, shelfmark - 1071.a. 31. [ c.1694 ] 12mo; has been inspected and is similar to our copy, the pagination, t.p. vignette, head and tailpieces, and the Sonnet on sig. K2r all correspond with the BL copy. However, our copy has a frontispiece engraving of Rosa by Petrus Leo Ghezzius ( 1674 - 1755 ), as has the copy at Princeton, which appears to be the only recorded copy with a frontispiece. Salvator Rosa (1615-1673 ) was born near Naples he was an engraver, poet and stage actor. He was a very talented artist, his ' Prometheus ' is the picture that cemented his reputation. He was also a poet who produced some of the best satiric poetry in the Italian tradition. He wrote seven long satires, six which are included in the book offered here, their subject matter being obvious in their titles. They were so popular that they were reprinted and counter feited many times. This is a rare book, OCLC FirstSearch ( on-line 10 / 22 ) locates only one copy in the USA with the frontispiece - Princeton. .
