Chapter One

First Things First

To understand the way God operates is well beyond our natural way of thinking. I emphasize natural, because we tend to think the way we have been taught and according to the earthly wisdom that we have acquired through our home life, schooling and even religious upbringing. His mercy and plans far surpass anything that we have learned through our own education. We've all read the scripture in Isaiah 56:9 that assure us that "My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts". We've taken those scriptures and run with the idea that the born again believer is still living, thinking and doing according to the unrighteous man, to which these refer. Notice in verse 7 that the wicked and unrighteous man should forsake his ways and thoughts. How should that apply to us today, as sons of God, when Paul clearly judged between the carnal and spiritual man in I Corinthians 2:14-16, "But the natural man receives not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them because they are spiritually discerned. For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he shall instruct Him? BUT WE HAVE THE MIND OF CHRIST". It's clear that Paul believes that when we receive the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus that we should be able to receive and know the things of the Spirit of God. His Word is the final authority in heaven and in earth and in us. He is able to do great things in us and through us because we are His sons and daughters. Ephesians 3:20 says: "The action of His power that is at work WITHIN US is able to carry out His purpose and do far over and above all that we dare ask or think (infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, hopes or dreams)". We must first recognize His authority in us and that He uses us to bring about His will on earth. Jesus spoke and taught in the authority of God. We also may and must speak and teach in the authority of God, through Christ Jesus, our Lord. Jesus was speaking to the religious authority in the temple in John 7:16-17 "My teaching is not my own, but Him who sent me and if any man desires to do His will, he will have the needed illumination to recognize, whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking from myself and of my own accord and on my own authority". Those religious people thought He was mad! Jesus said in John 8:28 "I do nothing of myself but as my Father has taught me, I speak these things." Jesus was on earth and living in the authority of God and man. As His children, so we are also, living in the authority of God and man. Why would Jesus teach us to pray for His will to be done on earth, just like it is in heaven if it were impossible? He had power in both realms and so do we.

So, firstly, recognize His authority, His wisdom, His knowledge, His will for us on this earth and His plan to make it happen through us. Acknowledge your son ship and submission to Him, just as Jesus did and allow God to illuminate your mind and spirit. We have tried to do things on our own and never realized that even Jesus himself didn't do things on His own. He received His direction, power, authority and results from the Father. We do also, through Jesus our Lord.

The Apostle Paul recognized and taught that it is God, working inside the faithful believer that accomplishes the task. In Colossians 1:29, Paul acknowledges: "Superhuman energy that God enkindles and works in him". When we come to the realization that it is not us, under our own power, but God, working in and through us that changes lives, we too will exercise our authority in both heaven and earth. Didn't Jesus teach us to pray for His will to be done in earth as in heaven? Matthew 6:10 "Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven". Isn't it His will for all men to be saved? I Timothy 2:4, "Who will have all men to be saved and to come unto the knowledge of the truth". It is with difficulty and far too casual faith, that we reluctantly accept our God given authority to tie the heavenly realm of God's laws to earth and our ability to declare and decree those laws relevant and superior here, but in Matthew 18:18 Jesus grants us the authority of heaven on earth. "Verily I say unto you, whatsoever ye shall bind (to tie) on earth shall be bound (tied) in heaven; and whatsoever ye shall loose (untie, destroy) on earth shall be loosed (untied, destroyed) in heaven."

The keys that He gave us in that same verse are representative of the authority that we have to bind and loose whatever Jesus found lawful to bind and loose. It was no mistake that Jesus granted us this power, but it is a very costly mistake for us not to use it. Believers conduct themselves as if they are dependent upon their own abilities or their power. No, it's not what we can do on our own, but what we will allow Him to do through us. Just as a mentor puts his thoughts into the mind of his student and a teacher puts his thoughts into the mind of a child, Philippians 2:5 says to "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus". Let is a word that implies that it requires our permission. If we let Him, we may hold the very thoughts and mysteries of God, so that He may instruct us! I Corinthians 2:16, "But we have the mind of Christ and do hold the thoughts (feelings and purposes) of His heart."

In Luke 24: 45 when Jesus realized that the disciples didn't understand His words, He opened their understanding so that they might understand the scriptures. He will do the same for each of us who ask Him. We are no different today than they were. We have also become blinded by improper (though well meaning) teaching and have lost the power to understand that His plan was without error and that Christ in us is the hope of glory (Colossians 1:27) or THE HOPE OF GLORY IS IN US. Think on that!

In Chapter 1 of Colossians, Paul flips the switch from the darkness of old understandings to the true revelation of who Jesus really is and what He has done for us and in us. He prays for the church to be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. So today, I also pray for you, that the eyes of your understanding will be opened and that you will be strengthened in His might and see the immeasurable inheritance, adoption and mystery of Christ that is in you right now.

Father, I have been blind and without understanding of your ways. Just as Jesus opened the disciples understanding of the scriptures, so I ask you to open my mind that I might experience your power working in me. Help me to lean not to my own understanding, but in...
