This is the U.S. and true first edition of Churchill's third book and only novel. A very young Churchill was exuberant about publication at the time. Even though Savrola was his third published book, it was actually the first book he undertook and the second he completed. He would later make deprecating comments about the book. In his 1930 autobiography he wrote, "I have consistently urged my friends to abstain from reading it [Savrola]." However, his mixed feelings about his only novel did not keep Churchill from writing a foreword to a new edition in 1956, in which he said: "The preface to the first edition in 1900 submitted the book 'with considerable trepidation to the judgment or the clemency of the public.' The intervening fifty-five years have somewhat dulled though certainly not changed my sentiments on this point." Irrespective of Churchill's feelings about his book, this novel certainly provides an interesting insight into the early perspective and sentiment of the then very young Churchill. Of note, this is one of the few Churchill books for which the U.S. edition is the true first edition. In fact, the British first edition was issued from American plates. This is a sound, respectable copy in good overall condition with a flaw that leads it to be priced far lower than it would otherwise command. The blue cloth binding remains square and tight, with decent shelf presentation, modest wear to extremities, and a little faint mottling to the covers. The contents are free of spotting and retain clean edges. The chief flaw of this copy is moisture staining to the entire fore edge of the text block, confined to the blank inner margins. The moisture exposure is most visible to the first and final leaves, nearly invisible between pages 1 and 340, but nonetheless imparts a faint fore edge stain to the prelims and publisher's rear catalogue and leaves a hint of ripple to the fore edges. We note a single previous owner name inked to the front free endpaper, and a cosmetic partial split to the paper at the rear pastedown gutter, which nonetheless remains tight and structurally sound.
